Procedure

How to Convert JPG / PNG to WebP

Follow these six steps. The whole process takes seconds, and nothing ever leaves your device.

Add your images

Drag JPG or PNG files onto the dashed box above, click “Choose images” to browse, or simply paste an image from your clipboard with Ctrl+V (or ⌘+V on Mac). You can add as many files as you like at once.

Set the quality level

Move the WebP Quality slider. 75–85% is the sweet spot for most photos — visually identical to the original but far smaller. Use 90%+ for graphics with fine detail or flat colours, and 50–70% when file size matters more than perfection.

Changing the slider re-converts everything automatically once you release it.

Choose a resize option (optional)

If your images are larger than you need, pick a maximum dimension from the Resize dropdown — for example 1920 px for web hero images or 800 px for blog thumbnails. Aspect ratio is always preserved.

Wait for the conversion

Each file appears as a card with a spinner while it converts — usually well under a second per image. When done, you’ll see the original size, the new WebP size, the percentage saved, and the final pixel dimensions.

Download your WebP files

Click Download on an individual card, or “Download all as WebP” to save every converted file at once. Files are named automatically — photo.jpg becomes photo.webp.

If a download is blocked, click the ⤢ icon on the card and save the image manually from the preview window.

Use the files on your site

Upload the .webp files to your website, CMS, or CDN exactly as you would a JPG. Keep the original JPG/PNG as a fallback only if you need to support very old browsers (Internet Explorer 11 and earlier).

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything people usually ask about converting images to WebP with this tool.

Is this converter really free and private?

Yes. The entire conversion runs inside your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images are never uploaded to a server, never stored, and never transmitted anywhere. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.

What is WebP, and why should I use it?

WebP is an image format developed by Google. Compared to JPG it typically produces 25–35% smaller files at the same visual quality, and unlike JPG it supports transparency (like PNG) as well as animation.

Smaller images mean faster page loads, lower bandwidth costs, and better Core Web Vitals scores — which can improve your search ranking.

Which browsers and platforms support WebP?

WebP is supported by essentially every modern browser and platform:

  • Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, Brave — all versions since ~2020
  • Safari on macOS 11+ and iOS 14+
  • Android 4.0+ and all modern Android browsers
  • WordPress 5.8+, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow
  • All major CDNs, including Cloudflare and CloudFront

Only very old software — Internet Explorer 11 and Safari before 2020 — cannot display WebP.

What quality setting should I use?

A good starting point:

  • 75–85% — best all-round choice for photographs
  • 85–95% — images with sharp text, logos, or fine patterns
  • 50–70% — thumbnails and images where size is critical

The difference between 80% and 100% is often invisible to the eye but can double the file size. Start at 80% and only go higher if you notice artefacts.

Why did one of my WebP files end up larger than the original?

This can happen with PNG files that have very few colours — screenshots, flat icons, simple illustrations. PNG compresses those extremely well, and WebP’s lossy mode can sometimes produce a bigger file.

In those cases, try lowering the quality to 60–70%, or simply keep the original PNG. The card shows a red +% pill when this happens.

Does converting to WebP remove transparency?

No. WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparent PNGs stay transparent after conversion. The converter draws onto a canvas with alpha: true and preserves the transparency through to the output.

How many files can I convert at once?

There’s no hard limit. The practical ceiling is your device’s memory — a few hundred high-resolution images will work fine on a modern computer. Very large batches may take longer because each image is processed one after another to avoid freezing the page.

Is there a file size limit?

No server-side limit exists because nothing is uploaded. Your only constraint is browser memory. Images up to roughly 50–100 megapixels convert without trouble on typical hardware. Extremely large files may be slow or fail on low-memory devices.

Why doesn’t the download button work?

This usually happens for one of three reasons:

  • The page is running inside a sandboxed preview or iframe that blocks downloads.
  • Your browser is blocking multiple automatic downloads.
  • A pop-up or download blocker extension is interfering.

Fix: click the ⤢ icon on the file card. A preview window opens — right-click the image (or long-press on mobile) and choose “Save image as…”. You can also save this HTML file to your computer and open it directly, which resolves the sandbox issue entirely.

Can I use the output images commercially?

Yes — WebP is an open format with no licensing restrictions, and this tool adds no watermarks or metadata of any kind. The converted file belongs entirely to you.

Does converting strip EXIF data like GPS location?

Yes. The canvas-based conversion re-encodes the pixels only, so EXIF metadata — camera model, GPS coordinates, date taken, and so on — is not carried over. This is usually good for privacy, but keep your originals if you need that data.

Can I convert WebP back to JPG or PNG?

Not with this tool — it’s a one-way JPG/PNG → WebP converter. To go the other direction, open the WebP file in any image editor (Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, or even Preview on macOS) and export it as JPG or PNG.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded, all the conversion logic is already in your browser. You can turn off Wi-Fi and keep converting. If you save the HTML file locally, it works offline permanently.

Tip: Quality 75–85% gives the best balance of size and visual fidelity.
WebP files are supported by all modern browsers, and by most CMS platforms and CDNs.
