NEW DELHI: In an unusual seismic occurrence, several parts of India were shaken by earthquakes on Friday morning, sending tremors through Chengalpet in Tamil Nadu, Vijayapura in Karnataka, Rajkot in Gujarat, and Shillong in Meghalaya. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported varying magnitudes for each event, with local authorities closely monitoring the situation. While there are no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties, the seismic activity has heightened concerns in these regions.
Chengalpet, Tamil Nadu: A magnitude 3.2 earthquake shook Chengalpet in northern Tamil Nadu, as reported by the National Center for Seismology. The tremor, occurring at 7.39 am, had a depth of 10 km. Although the quake’s intensity was low, it raised concerns among the local residents. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
Vijayapura, Karnataka: Parts of Vijayapura district in north Karnataka experienced a magnitude 3.0 earthquake at 6.52 am, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre. The epicenter was located 4.3 kilometers southeast of Ukumanal village in Vijayapura Taluk. The seismic intensity map indicated low intensity, with the potential for tremors to be felt within a radius of 40-50 km. Authorities assured the public that the quake is unlikely to cause harm, given its low magnitude.
Rajkot, Gujarat: Gujarat’s Rajkot district was hit by a 3.9-magnitude earthquake at 9 am, according to the National Center for Seismology. The epicenter was situated 133 km NNW of Rajkot, with a depth of 20 km. While there have been no immediate reports of casualties or property damage, residents in the affected area felt the tremors. Authorities are conducting assessments to ensure the safety of the community.
Shillong, Meghalaya: Shillong and its adjoining areas experienced a 3.8-magnitude earthquake at 8.46 am, reported the Regional Seismological Centre. The quake’s epicenter was located in the Mawphlang area, southwest of the city, at a depth of 14 km.
