Lalduhoma: Lalduhoma takes oath as CM, gives Mizoram 1st woman cabinet mantri | India News

AIZAWL: Former IPS officer Lalduhoma, a maverick who led his fledgling party to a famous electoral victory against Zoramthanga’s MNF, was sworn in on Friday as the CM of a 12-member Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) government in Mizoram that includes the state’s first woman minister of cabinet rank in 61-year-old Lalrinpuii.
The new government has seven cabinet ministers and four ministers of state.Lalfamkima was appointed pro-tem speaker of the 40-member assembly.
Lalduhoma (74), who spent much of his career bearing the cross of being India’s first MP to be disqualified under the anti-defection law, and his ministerial colleagues were endorsed by a committee of elders assigned to vet all crucial decisions of ZPM on the lines of how tribal societies operate.
Among the dignitaries present at the swearing-in were ex-CMs Zoramthanga and Lal Thanhawla of Congress, relegated to fourth place this election with a lone seat. BJP won two seats. All 10 newly elected MNF MLAs, including legislature party leader Lalchhandama Ralte, attended the event.
Soon after being sworn in by governor Hari Babu Kambhampati at Raj Bhavan, Lalduhoma announced at a presser 12 “priority programmes” for implementation over the next 100 days.
The new chief minister retained the finance, planning and programme implementation, general administration, political and cabinet, law and vigilance portfolios. Journalist-turned-politician K Sapdanga will be the home minister, besides handling urban affairs and poverty alleviation, personal and administrative reforms, and disaster management and rehabilitation.
Lalrinpuii was given charge of the health and family welfare, social welfare and tribal affairs, women and child development, and tourism departments.
ZPM’s Lunglei district president is only the third woman in Mizoram’s history to become a minister. Her two predecessors -Lalhlimpuii Hmar, part of the first MNF ministry headed by Laldenga in 1987, and Vanlalawmpuii Chawngthu, who joined the government in 2017 – were both ministers of state.
Besides carving an identity in politics, where few Mizo women venture, Lalrinpuii runs a hostel for students from the North-East in Bengaluru.
Two other women were elected to the assembly this time – Baryl Vanneihsangi of ZPM won the Aizawl South-3 seat while Pravo Chakma of MNF got the West Tuipui seat.
When Mizoram was a district council under the Assam administration, and a Union Territory from 1972 to 1987, women would be nominated to public office. The first woman to be elected to the assembly was L Thanmawii of People’s Conference from Serchhip constituency in 1978.
